How to build a spring summer wardrobe
A spring summer collection is recognised by how it is built, not by its colours: open or perforated uppers, minimal linings, thinner and more flexible soles. The same criteria apply to women's shoes, bags and accessories for the warm season, because the foot swells in the heat and over a long day on your feet, and in summer a bag is carried against bare skin: softer leathers and less rigid structures are not a styling whim, they are a practical requirement.
The sandal is the shoe that defines the season, and it splits into families that behave very differently. A sandal with an adjustable ankle strap holds the foot in place and is the one you can wear longest; a mule leaves the heel free and slips off in one movement, but calls for a more controlled stride; a thong sandal with a wide band spreads the pressure over a larger area than a thin-strap one, which starts to chafe after a few hours. Summer materials are chosen for the way they react to heat and humidity. Suede stays soft and breathes, but it stains with water and needs dry brushing; smooth leather wipes clean with a damp cloth and is the most forgiving in daily wear; raffia and woven cotton weigh almost nothing and stay cool, at the cost of lower abrasion resistance. Lightweight rubber or EVA soles cut weight compared with leather and cushion the impact on hot tarmac, while the cork of a wedge slowly settles into the shape of the foot and grows more comfortable with use.
Warm-weather bags follow the same logic of lightening: smaller formats, adjustable straps, simple fastenings and pale colours instead of black. A crossbody leaves your hands free and is the most practical choice on long days; a straw or canvas tote handles the shops, the beach and travel; a clutch is for the evening and for nothing else. Accessories — narrow belts, scarves, wide-brimmed hats — are often what separates two outfits built on the same clothes, and they are chosen alongside the women's bags.
A summer wardrobe works when a few pairs cover many occasions. A low sandal in natural leather goes with jeans, linen and a dress and carries both the daytime and an informal dinner: it is the piece with the best ratio between what it costs and how often it is worn. A 6 cm block heel is more stable and more wearable than a 4 cm stiletto, because it rests on a broad base; a wedge adds height without the effort of a high heel, since the drop between forefoot and heel stays small.
Summer sizing does not always match winter sizing. The foot expands in the heat, so a sandal should be tried on at the end of the day and must leave a few millimetres of margin at the toe and at the heel: adjustable straps and elastic inserts recover what a closed shoe will not forgive. On open styles the width of the band across the instep also matters, because the wider it is the better it spreads the weight and the less it marks, as does the height of the fastening, which on a slim ankle should sit low so it does not shorten the leg.
