How to choose a women's slip-on, and when it makes sense
A slip-on is a closed shoe you put on without any fastening: it stays on the foot thanks to the stretch of the upper or to an elastic side panel, not to laces or buckles. Everything else follows from that construction, starting with the fact that the fit has to be judged on the first try, because there is no lacing that can correct it afterwards.
On this page the upper is in smooth leather, in suede or in stretch knit, and the three materials behave differently over time. Smooth leather gives very little and moulds to the foot within a few days; suede is softer from the start but is vulnerable to water and should be protected before the first wear; stretch knit adapts immediately and is the only one that forgives a high instep. Anyone with a wide foot or a pronounced instep lowers the risk by starting from knit, which is also the only material that tolerates half a size out without becoming uncomfortable.
The trims are not only decorative: fringe, tassels and a metal horsebit stiffen the area they cover. A fringe across the instep adds a layer of leather exactly where the shoe has to flex, which is why fringed models fit slightly tighter than their plain equivalents. The horsebit, on the other hand, sits on the saddle, ahead of the flex point, and does not change the fit: it affects the look and the weight, not how the shoe adapts to the foot.
Underneath, the differences matter as much as above. A thin, flexible sole is light and sits better under tailored trousers; a wedge or a platform raises the heel by four or five centimetres and changes the way you land, lengthening the stride. Anyone walking many hours on tarmac gets more relief from a rubber sole with some thickness than from a flat, rigid shoe.
The right moment to try a slip-on is in the evening, when the foot is at its largest: if it feels comfortable then, it will fit well all day. For the same lightness in a flat shoe with an open heel or a strap, look at the women's ballet flats; for a sportier model with laces, the women's sneakers.
