Women's autumn winter sneakers

Women's sneakers for the autumn winter season: joggers on an elongated sole, chunky styles with a squared volume, and low models on a thin sole, in suede, smooth nappa and technical nylon.

These are the sneakers with a closed upper and a lining, made for cold damp days. If you want more coverage on the same sturdy sole, women's combat boots are the next step.

How to choose a women's sneaker for winter

A winter sneaker differs from a summer one in three ways: the upper is closed rather than perforated, there is a lining, and the sole is taller and more deeply cut. In women's autumn winter sneakers the height of the sole is not only about the line: it lifts the foot away from cold wet asphalt, and the tread pattern decides how much grip is left on fallen leaves and damp cobbles.

Winter sneakers divide by the volume of the sole. The jogger has an elongated, slightly curved sole, lengthens the leg and stays the easiest to wear with wide trousers; the chunky has a tall squared sole, adds centimetres without a heel but weighs more; the low sneaker on a thin sole is the one that goes under a skirt or a narrow trouser without widening the silhouette. Among the bigger volumes there are thick soles in soft nappa, as on Back 70, and animal-print finishes on generous shapes, as on Joia Paris. The full category, across every season, is in women's sneakers.

Winter materials also change how the shoe looks. Suede reads as the warmest and is the most vulnerable to water; smooth nappa cleans with a damp cloth; technical nylon shrugs off rain and dries quickly; pony, leopard and reptile prints take the place of solid colour when the shoe is meant to be the focal point. The range runs from suede panels with metallic or glitter details, as on Hogan, to printed uppers on jogger volumes, as on No Name. Anyone after the same comfort without lacing will find the natural comparison in women's slip-ons.

The fastening decides how closely the shoe follows the foot. Laces let you tighten across the instep and remain the only answer for a narrow foot; a hook-and-loop strap adjusts in one movement and suits a high instep; a side zip is there to get in, not to hold. Leather uppers on compact soles sit here, as in Fabi's F65 line, alongside lower, unstructured models, as on Crime London: two different readings of the same shoe.

A winter sneaker does not replace an ankle boot on every occasion, but it covers the long days. Under wide trousers or a straight jean the tall sole barely shows and the leg reads longer; with a knee-length skirt and a ribbed sock the contrast is deliberate and works; with tailored trousers only a low, clean sneaker holds up. Neutral colours — off white, tan, dark brown, black — last several seasons; prints and metallics date sooner but solve an outfit.

Try the size of a winter sneaker with the sock you will actually wear, and at the end of the day, when the foot is at its largest. Leave just under a centimetre in front of the big toe: if the shoe is right barefoot, it will be tight with a wool sock. On care: suede needs a water-repellent spray before first wear and brushing only when dry; pale rubber soles clean with water and neutral soap; an EVA midsole should never be left on a radiator, because direct heat distorts it.
