Women's ankle boot by Pons Quintana, Brisab model, in dark brown woven suede. The woven technique is the signature of the Minorcan maison: here it's handcrafted with wide strips of suede — the EXPRESS technique — and covers the entire shoe, from the toe to the shaft and down to the heel. The wide strips change the way the suede behaves. Each strip reflects light from a different angle, so the brown is never flat: the surface has a texture you can see and feel, and every pair has a slightly different sequence of folds. The flip side is that the upper has a natural give that a solid piece of leather doesn't have, and it molds to the foot from the very first wears. The sole is the second thing that defines this model. An 8 cm block heel and a 3 cm front platform, both covered in matching suede, with no contrasting material: the shoe is monochrome from top to bottom, and the volume of the sole reads as shape, not color. The toe is squared and the fit is snug. What really matters is the ratio between the two heights: 8 cm of heel minus 3 cm of platform makes an effective 5 cm rise between heel and toe. That's what the foot actually feels — the pitch of a 5 cm shoe, with the visual height of an 8 cm one. That's why a construction like this can be worn for many hours, while a solid 8 cm heel can't. The closure is a zip on the inner side, allowing the boot to be put on without straining the shaft. The sole is rubber with a woven-pattern tread, echoing the craftsmanship of the upper. With a midi skirt or a dress, the boot is seen in full, and that's the proportion in which the volume of the sole works best. With trousers, you need a style that ends above the ankle, or wide jeans that rest on the platform: crushed under long trousers, the model loses its purpose.
